Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions.
The music stops when I close the app.
Use Go to background (Now Playing's More menu, or Settings → Exit) to close the player and keep the music. Closing it another way (PortMaster's SELECT+START, closing the window) keeps the music only if Settings → Keep playing on close is on; it's off by default on handhelds and on by default on the desktop. Quit always stops everything.
How do I change songs while I'm playing a game?
Press FN three times, then L1/R1 (previous/next), L2/R2 (seek 10 s) or SELECT (pause). Headphone buttons work too.
Where are my settings and data?
Next to the program: audiofilus.json for settings and the data/ folder for everything else (library cache, playlists, history, lyrics, podcasts, the log). See Where your files live.
On muOS, should I use the PortMaster port or the muOS app?
Either works the same. The .muxapp installs from muOS's Archive Manager and shows up under Applications; the PortMaster port shows up under Ports. They keep separate settings and data.
Which formats does it play?
MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, WAV, AIFF, DSD, tracker modules (MOD, XM, IT, S3M), console music (NSF, SPC, GBS, VGM…), 8-bit computer music (SID, YM, VTX, PT3), M3U playlists and CUE sheets. See Formats.
My NSF/SPC/VGM files don't play.
Console music needs libgme, which the PortMaster port, the muOS app and the Linux downloads bring. If you installed by copying only the program, copy the libs.aarch64 (or libs.x86_64) folder next to it too. On a Linux desktop you can also install your distribution's libgme package. The Windows download includes it too.
YouTube Music doesn't show up.
It needs your own yt-dlp in the app's yt-dlp folder. See YouTube Music.
Lyrics aren't found.
Check that Settings → Lyrics from the web is on and that the device is online. LRCLIB doesn't have every song; you can put a .lrc with the song's name next to it, or pick another version in Lyrics → START → Choose lyrics. A search that found nothing is retried after a week.
The lyrics are early or late.
On the lyrics view, ↑/↓ move them half a second at a time; the offset is saved for that song.
Last.fm says “API key missing”.
Your build doesn't include Audiofilus's Last.fm application key. The official releases do; download the latest one.
A radio station won't play.
Audiofilus plays MP3 and AAC stations. HLS streams (addresses ending in .m3u8) play too, except a few that use uncommon codecs (AAC LATM, or Opus/AC-3 in fMP4). Stations whose address is a .pls or .m3u are followed to the stream.
Can I add my own radio stations?
Yes: put .m3u/.pls lists in the app's radio folder (they show under Radio → My lists), or use START → Add by address on Favorites or My lists. You can pick another folder in Settings → Radio lists.
The battery level looks wrong.
Audiofilus reads the system's battery. Some consoles' battery gauge always reports 0 % (like the RG353V with dArkOS); there Audiofilus estimates the level from the charge or the voltage, or hides it if it can't.
On dArkOS I can't find the app's folder.
If your games are on the second SD card, ports live in /roms2/ports instead of /roms/ports, so the log is at /roms2/ports/audiofilus/data/audiofilus.log.
Does it work on EmuELEC?
Yes, through PortMaster, on the Odroid Go Advance and Super, the GameForce Chi and Amlogic TV boxes. It hasn't been tested on a real device yet: if something fails, open an issue with ports/audiofilus/log.txt. See EmuELEC.
Pressing the power button doesn't suspend the console.
With the player open, the power button is meant to put Audiofilus to sleep (screen off, music on), not to suspend. After Go to background it suspends as usual. On ROCKNIX with “fake suspend”, see ROCKNIX.
How much battery does it use?
Little: on an RG34XX-SP, sleep mode draws about 260 mA, around 11 to 12 hours of music. The visualizers and the equalizer cost more; with the screen off, nothing is drawn.
How do I update?
From version 0.9.1 on, in Settings → Update: the app tells you when there is a new release and installs it with A, keeping your settings. Older versions need one manual update: download the new package from the latest release and copy it over the old one.
How do I install it on an iPhone?
Download audiofilus-ios-unsigned.ipa from the latest release and install it with Sideloadly or AltStore, which sign it with your own Apple ID. Or add the source https://juanvillacortac.github.io/audiofilus/altstore.json to AltStore, SideStore or LiveContainer: new releases show up there as updates.
How do I add music on iPhone?
Copy songs into On My iPhone → Audiofilus in the Files app, pick any folder in Settings → Folder, or open songs in Audiofilus from Files or other apps. Servers, radio and podcasts work without local music.
How do I open files from the file manager?
On Linux, right-click → Open with → Audiofilus (after installing with the installer or audiofilus desktop install). On Windows, Audiofilus registers itself the first time it runs: use Open with, or Play with Audiofilus on folders. They play as a temporary queue.
Do server songs work without network?
The catalog is saved, so you can browse offline, and songs you already played are cached (400 MB by default). Songs that aren't cached need the server. Download songs to your library to keep them for good.
What does Audiofilus send online?
Only what you use: radio-browser (the radio screens), Apple's podcast directory and the RSS feeds (Podcasts), LRCLIB (lyrics, unless you turn Lyrics from the web off), your own servers, YouTube via your yt-dlp, the module archives (Modules), MusicBrainz, the Cover Art Archive and iTunes (only when you use Find cover or Look up on MusicBrainz), the GitHub releases (the daily update check), and Last.fm or ListenBrainz only if you connect them. Sending to speakers and DLNA stay on your local network, and DLNA is off unless you turn it on.
Where do the modules come from?
From four free online archives: The Mod Archive, Modland, VGMRips and AMP (see Modules). Listening downloads the file to data/cache/modules, so it plays straight away the next time; Save to the library copies it to audiofilus modules in your music folder.
Can I use a MIDI keyboard?
Yes, in the tracker: plug a USB MIDI keyboard into the handheld or the computer (Linux, Windows, iPhone/iPad) and its notes play the current instrument, or get written into the phrase. The tracker can also follow or send MIDI clock. See MIDI.
Can I play on my TV or speaker?
Yes: in Now Playing, START → Send to… lists the DLNA/UPnP speakers and TVs and the Chromecasts on your network. The music goes on there and Audiofilus becomes the remote. See Network.
Can my TV or phone see my music?
Turn on Settings → Share library (DLNA) and your library shows up on TVs and DLNA apps of the same network. With Receive music (DLNA), apps like BubbleUPnP can send music to Audiofilus to play. Both are off by default. See Network.
Can I fix wrong tags or missing covers?
Yes, for files in your own library: a song's or album's START menu has Edit tags, Album tags, Find cover and Look up on MusicBrainz, which fills in titles, numbers, year and genre from MusicBrainz. See Library.
Some songs are louder than others. What can I do?
Turn on Settings → ReplayGain, and for songs that have no ReplayGain tags use Compute ReplayGain on the album or artist: it measures them and writes the tags. See Sound.
Do arcade VGMs play?
Yes, on the handheld and Linux packages: they include libvgm, which emulates almost every chip in VGM files, from arcade boards (Out Run, CPS1/2, System 16…) to the NES, Game Boy and OPL. On Windows and iPhone, VGMs play through libgme, which only emulates the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System chips; there, other files say VGM chips not emulated instead of playing silence, and VGMRips hides those packs.
Do the visualizers react to the tracker?
Yes. While the tracker plays, the visualizers, the beat-following games and the background follow its music.
Can I use my MilkDrop presets?
Yes, MilkDrop 1 presets (.milk): put them in the app's milkdrop folder (subfolders are fine) and open the MilkDrop visualizer. After adding files, use START → Rescan presets. MilkDrop 2 presets load, but their shaders are ignored, so they may look different. See MilkDrop. To open it, press SELECT → Visualizer and use ←/→ until MilkDrop (v0.12.0 or newer). You can pick another folder in Settings → MilkDrop presets.
The buttons don't match the letters on my console.
Turn on Settings → Swap A/B and X/Y (in the System section). It swaps accept and back, and X and Y, for consoles with Nintendo-style labels (A on the right, X on top). To select it, press whichever button accepts right now.
Does it support audiobooks?
Yes. .m4b files, files with the audiobook genre and anything in an Audiobooks folder play as books: it remembers where you were in each one, shows their chapters, skips 30 seconds and changes speed without changing the pitch. See Audiobooks.
Can it wake me up with music?
Yes: Settings → Alarm. Pick the time, the days and what plays; the volume rises little by little. It plays with the player closed; on Knulli it also wakes a sleeping console, lid closed included, and on other systems it depends (never with the console turned off). See Alarm.
