Modules
Tracker modules and console music from four online archives: browse, search, listen, save to your library or open in the tracker.
The archives
Open Modules from the screens bar (SELECT). Each archive is a tab on the left:
| Archive | What's there | Browse |
|---|---|---|
| The Mod Archive | Tracker modules (MOD, XM, IT, S3M…) | Most downloaded, new, random |
| Modland | The biggest collection of modules and console music, in every format | Random |
| VGMRips | Console and arcade soundtracks (Mega Drive, Master System, arcade boards, NES, Game Boy…) as packs of VGM tracks | Most downloaded, new, random |
| AMP (Amiga Music Preservation) | Amiga modules, by composer | New |
Each tab starts with what the archive offers to browse. Only what Audiofilus can play is listed (SID and some Amiga-only formats aren't). None of them needs an account.
Browsing and listening
| Button | Does |
|---|---|
| ↑/↓ | Choose an archive (on the left) or a result |
| A | Listen: the file is downloaded and plays (a VGMRips pack plays all its tracks) |
| X | Search the archive you're on |
| START | The menu (below) |
The START menu on a result has:
- Listen.
- Save to the library: copies the file to an
audiofilus modules/<artist>folder in your music folder, and the library picks it up. - Open in the tracker (MOD and XM): imports it as a new tracker song you can edit. See Import and export.
- More by the artist.
- Search, and the ways to browse: Most downloaded, New and Random (the ones the archive has).
Downloads go through the Downloads queue, with their progress, and are kept in data/cache/modules: a file you already listened to plays straight away the next time.
In Search
The Library's Search has a Modules filter next to All, Library and YouTube (L1/R1). It searches the four archives at once; All includes them too, after your library. A on a module listens to it and START opens the same menu as above.
Good to know
- Modland's search works on its full index, which is downloaded the first time (about 6 MB) and refreshed once a month. After that, searching Modland is instant and works offline; listening still needs the network.
- The Mod Archive matches whole words of the file name or title.
- VGMRips returns up to 20 packs per search. On the handheld and Linux packages every pack plays (they include libvgm, which emulates the arcade and other chips); on Windows and iPhone only Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System packs are shown (see the FAQ).
- The archives are run by volunteers: Audiofilus spaces its requests and identifies itself, so please don't hammer them.
